First Day Hikes in North Georgia: Start 2026 on the Trail

From Marietta to the Mountains

Happy New Year and welcome back to Trails to Towns: North GA.

There’s no better way to kick off 2026 than with a First Day Hike. January 1st is a fresh start — new year, new miles, and a reset that only time on the trail can deliver. North Georgia offers some of the best hiking options in the state, especially across Cherokee and Cobb County.

Below are the best First Day Hikes for 2026, from quiet lakeside paths to challenging climbs with big payoff views. Whether you’re hiking solo, bringing the family, or hitting the trail with your dog, there’s an option here for you.

Best First Day Hikes in Cherokee County

Rope Mill Park (Woodstock) – Mill & Avalanche Loop

Rope Mill Park is always a solid First Day Hike choice. The Mill and Avalanche Loop delivers river views, wooden bridges, rolling terrain, and plenty of spots to stop for photos.

It’s dog-friendly, family-friendly, and popular — which means parking fills up fast. Plan to arrive early on January 1st.

Blankets Creek Trail System – South Loop

Blankets Creek is best known for mountain biking, but hikers know the South Loop is one of the quieter gems in winter. It’s shaded, peaceful, and surrounded by classic North Georgia forest.

After rain, the trail can get muddy, so waterproof shoes are highly recommended.

Hickory Log Creek Reservoir (Canton)

If you’re looking for something flat, peaceful, and scenic, Hickory Log Creek Reservoir is a great option — especially at sunrise. You’ll get calm water reflections, minimal elevation, and an easy pace that works for all fitness levels.

Parking is limited, so early morning or late afternoon tends to be best.

Best First Day Hikes in Cobb County

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park

Kennesaw Mountain is the iconic New Year’s Day hike in Metro Atlanta. The summit trail is a workout, but the view from the top — especially around golden hour — makes it worth every step.

If the main parking lot is full, the overflow lot on Old 41 usually has space.

Sope Creek (East Cobb)

Sope Creek is one of the most photogenic winter hikes in the area. The trail features historic mill ruins, waterfalls, and riverside scenery the entire way.

Be cautious on cold mornings — rocks near the water can freeze and become slick.

Allatoona Creek Trail

With more than 40 miles of trail, Allatoona Creek offers serious variety. One of the standout sections is Driftwood, which runs along the lake and moves through rolling fields, wooded areas, and lakeside views.

Parking is available from access points along Old Stilesboro Road.

Georgia State Parks First Day Hikes Near Metro Atlanta

Georgia State Parks host official ranger-led First Day Hikes each year, and several excellent options are close to Cherokee and Cobb County.

  • Red Top Mountain State Park – Easy guided hikes, lake views, and great for kids and dogs

  • Amicalola Falls State Park – Massive scenery and one of the most impressive waterfalls in Georgia

  • Fort Mountain State Park – Quieter routes with lakes and scenic overlooks

You can find the full schedule at GeorgiaStateParks.org/FirstDayHikes.

First Day Hike Tips for January 1st

  • Trails like Blankets Creek and Rope Mill can be muddy after rain

  • Bring water for your dog, as stream edges may be frozen

  • Parking fills up quickly at Kennesaw Mountain and Rope Mill — arrive early

  • Sunset is around 5:30 PM, so plan your timing

  • Screenshot your trail map ahead of time, as cell service can drop near lakes and ridge lines

If You Only Pick One First Day Hike

If you want the signature North Georgia First Day Hike — the one that challenges you and rewards you with a massive New Year view — Kennesaw Mountain is the pick. There’s a reason it draws crowds.

You start the year with effort and finish it with a view that feels like hitting the reset button.

If you’re after something quieter, Rope Mill Park’s Mill and Avalanche Loop offers a more relaxed experience while still delivering adventure and scenery without the crowds.
